‘Cinnamon-vine’ Dioscorea polystachya. 9cm pot. A flowering plant in the yam family. Also known as ‘Chinese Yam’. This wonderful perennial climbing plant produces cinnamon scented flowers in summer but is mainly grown for its very long edible tuber.
Unlike other species of yam, Dioscorea polystachya can be eaten raw. However the skin contains oxalate crystals which can cause skin irritation, so it is best to wear gloves when peeling the root and soak it in vinegar-water solution before using.
Grated yam is an important ingredient in the Japanese dish Okonomiyaki. A delicious savoury cabbage pancake.
