Daubenton - 2 cuttings
Brassica oleracea var ramosa
An extremely hardy perennial kale, although more cabbage than kale in habit and leaf shape. Probably descended from the wild European cabbages that can sometimes be seen along our coast. Can growing more than a metre tall in a couple of years, Daubenton Kale just goes on and on. It very rarely flowers and seems to happily bounce back from pigeon and caterpillar attacks. This cabbage really comes into it’s own during the ‘hungry gap’ when annual kales are getting tired. Often producing lots of delicious tender side shoots in late winter and early spring. Particularly good after frost which seems to improve both flavour & texture.
