Toona sinensis
A deciduous tree in the Meliaceae (Mahogany) family. Grows to 20m at a fast rate but can be coppiced. Can grow in very alkaline soils, prefers moist soil and cannot grow in shade. Hardy to UK zone 5 and is not frost tender. Young shoots & leaves are eaten cooked and have an onion-like flavour. A traditional leaf vegetable in China and Malaysia. The young leaves are also used to make Toona paste a condiment to serve with plain rice porridge for breakfast.
